IMPROVING CONTRACEPTIVE MEDTHOD MIX
Background
The Improving Contraceptive Method Mix (ICMM) project is investigating the impact of targeted advocacy activities to increase the use of long-acting and permanent contraceptive methods (LAPMs) in the East Java and West Nusa Tenggara Provinces of Indonesia. This report presents a summary of results from the ICMM baseline survey, which examined family planning (FP) knowledge, attitudes, and practices—as well as preferences, decision-making, and information sources—with a particular focus on LAPMs. Together with the ICMM qualitative study conducted previously, the results of this quantitative survey will inform district-level advocacy interventions aimed at improving contraceptive method mix in the study areas.
About
The four-year Improving Contraceptive Method Mix (ICMM) project began in October 2012 and is funded by USAID and the Australian Government. ICMM has two major components: (1) Collecting evidence about the use of family planning (FP)—with a particular focus on LAPMs; (2) Knowledge exchange and advocacy capacity-building to increase the availability and use of quality LAPM services in the study districts.
ICMM brings together the experience and program strengths of local Indonesian organizations, using the advocacy methodology developed by Advance Family Planning-Indonesia (AFP-I), enhanced by the knowledge management (KM) expertise and tools of the Knowledge for Health (K4Health) Project, and further supported by the technical expertise of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health. ICMM is implemented under K4Health through the Center for Communication Programs (CCP)’s Indonesia office, drawing upon the technical skills of the Center for Health Research/University of Indonesia and the Cipta Cara Padu Foundation. ICMM staff works closely with the National Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) and the Directorate of Maternal Health from Indonesia’s Ministry of Health to implement the activities.
